This fun item is the S.O.S patented sugar bowl with built in sugar tongs in the lid from the 1920s. Originally designed for sugar cubes it makes an excellent sweetie jar today or indeed could hold any dry items that need to be picked out with tongs.

The main body is handblown cut glass and the lid and tongs are silver plated. The base has daisy cut decoration to cover the pontil mark. The bowl was made in Birmingham by William Coulthard Ltd, a firm founded in the 1890s who ceased trading in the late 1920s. The design was later copied in the 1950s and 60s with chrome lids and tongs but this is an original 1920s one.

Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass, which has a few bubbles as is usually the case with handblown pieces. There is no plate loss to the lid and tongs. Everything is in full working order with the powerful spring on the tongs allowing them to open and close with no difficulty. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and is 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter. It weighs a hefty 507g / 17.9oz.

The rim of the lid is marked W.Ld.C, the makers' mark for William Coulthard Ltd, and A1 for the highest quality silver plate. The tongs are marked on one side with The S.O.S. Pascall's Patent and on the other with E.P.N.S. Pat No. 14048/15.
