We are very pleased to offer for sale this large, excellent watercolour by the listed artist THOMAS GREENHALGH, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it on a label on the old backing board 'Strasbourg Cathedral'. The painting depicts a procession leaving the altar in Strasbourg Cathedral. There are members of the clergy carrying a cross and candles and choirboys to the rear, with incense visible.

Strasbourg Cathedral is built in the Gothic style and was the tallest building in the world for many years. The 'carved stone lace' pulpit in the left foreground exists to this day, although the top piece is no longer in situ and the base is surrounded by railings. On google images, however, there are photos of old postcards showing the full structure as shown in this painting.

THOMAS GREENHALGH, 1848-1906 was a Lancashire artist in oil and watercolour, who exhibited from circa 1880-1897. He painted landscapes, churches and architectural works and appeared to have travelled extensively on the Continent. He was born in Heywood, Rochdale, the youngest of 7 children and, in the Census of 1861 was already listed as a painter. He married his wife Annie in 1871 and after that he moved to Southport where he remained and where he also died.

He exhibited 12 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 9 at the Manchester City Art Gallery and 6 at the Royal Hibernian Academy. There are 3 of his paintings in the National Collection and these can be view at the Atkinson Art Gallery in Manchester.

The artist is sometimes wrongly listed as J. Greenhalgh and not T. Greenhalgh as in The Dictionary of British Artists. He is correctly listed in Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Professor Dennis Child.
