Thompson? Vict.Watercolour West Bay Harbour Dorset

This is a beautifull executed watercolour by the artist Thompson, or I. Hampson, who has indistinctly signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it West Bay Harbour near Bridport, Dorset. The painting dates to after 1886, because that is when the large building, mistily shown in the background, was built. It was built as a group of tall lodging houses when the Victorians thought it a good idea to turn West Bay into a seaside resort. The row of cottages to the left of the tall lodging houses are no longer there. The busy harbour, which was removdelled in the 1970s, is now known as Bridport Harbour, but at the time West Bay was a separate entity. There are several elegant schooners tied up in the harbour, and a fisherman mending his nets on the jetty in the left foreground, with a female onlooker carrying a basket.
This is a really detailed work from a very competent artist and it is a great shame that we are unable to decipher his name, but there are two many Thompsons to look up for comparison and we can't find a Hampson, whose work is similar.
The watercolour is double mounted in two tone mountboard and is framed in a 2cm reeded gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 13 1/4" x 9 5/8" - 33.65cm x 24.45cm
Frame size: 19 7/8" x 16 3/8" - 50.5cm x 41.55cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good. There is no foxing and the colours are not faded. The mounts and frame and in very good condition with minimal wear.
