Thorowgood London Georgian Verge Bracket Clock


A fine quality Georgian verge fusee bracket antique clock. A bell top mahogany case of good proportions and colour. A cast brass top handle and standing on brass ogee bracket feet. Brass inset moulding surrounding the dial face. Arched side apertures with fretwork behind brass panels. A rarer arched painted dial with brass dial and spandrels. Four brass gilt corner finials. Cast recessed front arch panels. Pull cord repeating. A date dial to the arch. Brass hands and a signed to the dial 'Thorowgood London' . An 8-day duration verge escapement, twin fusee mechanism striking the hours on a bell. A very well engraved floral backplate to the mechanism. Circa 1785.
The Thorowgood family of clockmakers in London are recorded in Baillies "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World" as working from the late 1600's. Richard worked from 1783-1790 and Luke from 1768 - 1810 so could be either maker. A antique clock is illustrated on page 158 in 'The Georgian Bracket Clock' book by Stephen Thorowgood of similar appearance.
