Offered here is an excellent, original example of the now scarce antique Tilley IL 33 / IL34 suspension lamp.
These lamps, what with their highly distinctive design, were often referred to as 'donut' or 'lifebuoy' lamps and were produced from c.1930 - 1940.
They ran on oil and worked under pressure (the brass filling cap having a threaded nipple onto which a bicycle pump would be attached).
This example is the 300 candle power model, has a 12 inch reservoir and has been fitted with the larger 14 inch white and black enameled reflector option. This dates it to circa 1938 - 1940.
The lamp is completely original, unrestored and unmolested. It comes complete with the original hanging assembly, original heatshield, gallery and glass globe. These parts often become detached and lost, as does the filling cap.
These lamps were used indoors or in porches (churches, halls, huts, stations and shops).
They often had hard lives and relatively few survive today. Those that do come on to the market are either fully restored or require considerable work.
This lamp could be enjoyed as is, or would make a first-rate restoration project with a concours lamp being attainable with relatively little work.
It is untested but would likely run with minimal effort.
Condition -
Some chipping to white and black enamel at fixing screws. Some further crazing and loss to white enamel internally. Not too significant. Donut reservoir excellent with no dents. One very very very minor press, barely noticeable. Complete assembly. A remarkably good survivor. Unrestored. Email or call for any further information on this item.
