Tom Seymour 1844-1904 Oil Loch Linnhe Scotland

We are offering for sale a lovely oil on canvas by the artist THOMAS (TOM) SEYMOUR, who has signed the painting T. Seymour in the lower right hand corner, dated it 1888 and entitled it verso in pencil on the stretcher 'Inverlochy Loch Linnhe'. The painting depicts a misty, tranquil view of Loch Linnhe, with Ben Nevis standing prominently on the right hand side. There are several sailing boats out on the loch.
TOM SEYMOUR, as he sometimes signs himself, obviously found a ready market for his work without the need to exhibit, because we have found no reference to him in any of the art reference books, which draw their information from exhibition listings. He specialised in landscape and coastal works. As we have found no reference to a person of this name so far, it is possible that it is a pseudonym, a common practice among artists of this period. However, his work comes to the market quite often, as proven by the 133 auction listings on artprice.com, 69 on findartinfo.com, 37 on arcadja.com and 21 on artnet.com. A 30" x 20" painting made £900 at Tennants in North Yorkshire in 2005, a pair of 24" x 16" made £2,600 also at Tennants in 2004 and 6 of his oils were sold in Copenhagan in 2003, the highest realising £1,400. In 2007, a 24" x 16" made £750. His record price for an oil was £5,400 at Christie's in 2005.
The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate gilt frame and slip, which suits it extremely well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 16 5/8" x 10 3/4" - 42.2cm x 27.3cm
Frame size 23 5/8" x 17 3/4" - 60cm x 45.1cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good. There are no repairs to the canvas which is clean and taut. There is overall fine craquelure and slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame and slip are new.
