Tony Binder Austrian 1868-1944 Portrait Oil Arab

We are offering for sale this very well executed head and shoulders portrait oil on canvas by the orientalist painter Anton 'Tony' Binder, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1910. The portrait depicts an arab man, probably an Egyptian, in his middle to later years, wearing a white headress and robes and with a neatly trimmed grey beard.
Anton 'Tony' Binder was born in Vienna in 1868. He studied at Academies in Vienna and Munich, but later lived in Alexandria. He travelled throughout Egypt, went to Istanbul, Venice, Italy and France, gathering material for his paintings, but is most known for his orientalist paintings, which achieve the highest prices. In recent years the highest price for one of his oils has been £10,000, but they regularly reach into the thousands. We previously sold a watercolour portrait by this artist of Lady Carnarvon. He died in Nordlingen, Bavaria, in 1944.
Auction results for this artist may be found at artprice.com (226 listings, 133 of them oils), artnet.com (132), findartinfo.com (71) and arcadja.com (76).
