Victorian 18CT Gold Pencil Case, S Mordan & Co


An extremely nice, antique Victorian, 18CT Gold Pencil Case, made by Sampson Mordan & Co. and retailed by Houghton & Gunn.
The firm of Houghton & Gunn was established by William Houghton in 1822. From 1841 he traded from premises at 162 Bond Street, London. He went into partnership with Charles Henry Gunn in 1862 and the firm traded as Houghton & Gunn. The business was taken over by Asprey in 1906.
The case is hallmarked with the maker's mark "SM&Co" for Sampson Mordan & Co., "18" and the "crown" symbol for 18 carat gold, the Leopard's Head London town mark and date letter "R" for 1892/93. Also stamped with the retailer's name "Houghton & Gunn".
The case has nice engine turned decoration. It is in excellent condition.
It measures 90mm in length and 9mm in diameter. The weight is 12.3g. Specialists in Antique Pocket Watches & Vintage Wristwatches, Jewellery, Silver (including Scottish Provincial),Good Quality Antiques & Works of Art.
