Victorian Alabaster Grand Tour Sculpture Dying Gladiator

This is a good antique hand carved alabaster statue of the Dying Gladiator or the Dying Gaul after the ancient Roman marble copy of a lost Hellenistic sculpture thought to have been originally executed in bronze.
The original is thought to have been commissioned some time between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Celtic Gauls.
The Roman statue is currently on display in the Capitoline museum Rome.
This is a Victorian piece dating from around 1870, probably originally sold to wealthy tourist on the grand tour in Italy. The sculpture is in generally good order overall and is very well modelled and carved. There are a couple of historic repairs to the arm of the gladiator but not really that noticeable and part of the age of the piece. This is a very charming sculpture with great character and measures 30 cms long 17 cms high by 14 cms deep overall.
