Victorian Astral-Glazed Mahogany Bureau Bookcase
This attractive bureau bookcase dates from the late nineteenth century, but is older in style. It is constructed from mostly solid mahogany. The bureau bookcase has an astral-glazed top section with double doors that open to reveal a later lined interior with three adjustable lined shelves. The bottom section has a fall-front with a leather-topped writing surface and a selection of pigeon holes, drawers and a cupboard in the recess at the back. Beneath this are four graduated long drawers. The bureau bookcase is supported on shaped bracket feet. The drawers retain brass handles that may be replacements. All sections are lockable but only two keys are present - one works the lock on the top section and one works the lock on the small cupboard door inside the desk section.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, scratching, marking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of wood loss, including to the cock-beading around the drawers and to the cross-banding around the leather writing surface. There are some signs of restoration and repair. The leather writing surface is badly scuffed and worn and would benefit from replacement. The fall front is slightly warped. The keys for the fall front and the drawers are missing.
