Here we have a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug has an oval base with low wrythen decoration just above it. There are then garlands of embossed flowers to either side of a blank cartouche on each side of the body. The handle is flat topped with line decoration along its full length.

The cream jug is made in Birmingham by silversmith Edward Samuel Jones and dates to 1895. Jones had a fairly short career in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, registering his mark in 1895 but disappearing by 1900, meaning that his mark is rarely seen.

Condition is very good with just a slight bruise low down on the body, which is largely hidden by the decoration, and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The jug measures 9.8cm / 3.8ins from lip to handle, 5cm / 1.9ins across and stands 8.1cm / 3.2ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 70.7g / 2.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are clear to read although the makers' mark is somewhat rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter v for 1895 and the E.S.J makers' mark for Edward Samuel Jones.
