This is a superb quality antique Victorian solid oak carved monks’ bench, circa 1880.

This is a superb quality antique Victorian solid oak carved monks’ bench, circa 1880. The monks’ bench features a peg hinge tabletop, which is carved on both sides. The tabletop can be adjusted to act as a backrest or a tabletop. Below, the back is attached to the base with solid reeded arms. The front of the arms are carved with acanthus leaves. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes or boots. The central frame carving to the front of the bench below the seat depicts “Bacchus”, the Greek god of wine and fertility. Surrounding this are floral carvings. To the front and sides of the base there are pretty inset carved oak panels. The bench is built using peg construction.
This item features the original polish and patination which is why it boasts such a stunning deep rich golden oak colour.
