Victorian Pietra Dura Micro Mosaic Brooch - Flowers
An exceptionally beautiful piece of art on a small scale, this Victorian pietra dura brooch is a delight to look at.
It's part micro mosaic, part carved hardstone, creating this magnificent design of raised flowers in an urn.
I've never seen this combination before - clearly the work of a multi-skilled master craftsman.
Possibly Italian in origins, perhaps a Grand Tour piece in a very pretty silver frame.
The brooch measures 47 x 39 mm and there is some damage to the black marble base: some chips to the edges on the reverse and a crack, as shown in the photos.
The carved flowers are in very good condition and - apart from some minor loss only visible on close inspection - so is the mosaic.
Unique, colourful & beautifully made, this brooch would make the pride of a collection or a very special gift to a loved one.
