Victorian Plated Bottle Coaster, Elkington, 1846

Here we have a fine quality early Victorian Silver Plated Wine Bottle Coaster with a turned wooden base and a central silver plated button. The latticed sides of the coaster are decorated with flowers at each intersection making a very attractive pattern.
The bottle coaster is made in Birmingham by Elkington, Mason & Co and dates to 1846. Elkington & Co are the most important company in English silver plate having patented the electroplating process in 1838. In 1842 they received financial backing from Josiah Mason and for the next 20 years were known as Elkington, Mason & Co. They have held royal warrants from every monarch from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II.
Condition is very good, quite exceptionally so for its age, with no plate loss, no damage to the lattice work and no dings around the base. The green baize on the underside is showing signs of wear but this is only to be expected after 175 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coaster is 13.5cm / 5.3ins in diameter and stands 6.4cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs 310.2g / 10.9oz. It will comfortably hold any standard size red, white or sparkling wine bottle.
Unlike most silver plate companies, Elkington & Co introduced a date code for their products starting in 1841, so it is possible to give an exact year for their items from 1841 up to 1970. The marks on the bottom rim of the bottle coaster are clear to read. They show the E & Co below a crown for Elkington & Co, the Gothic E M &Co stamps for Elkington, Mason & Co and the no.6 in a diamond date mark for 1846.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
