Victorian Silver Masonic Locket, Chester, 1899

This is a small late Victorian Masonic Sterling Silver Locket. The locket is shield shaped with the traditional masonic symbol of the square and compasses embossed on the front. The locket is hinged on the right and opens from the left. A small piece of red material has been cut to shape by a previous owner and inserted into the left hand side of the locket.
The masonic locket is made by William John Pellow of Birmingham and assayed in Chester in 1899. Although based in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, virtually all of Pellow's work was assayed in Chester. His firm specialised in fobs and lockets in a wide variety of shapes and sizes including quite a number of masonic pieces. Founded in 1888, they remained in business until around 1960.
Condition is good with just a couple of small dings to the silver and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. The hinge works smoothly and the locket stays securely closed. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The locket is 2.3cm from top to bottom and 1.7cm across. It weighs in at 3.5g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the locket, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter Q for 1899 and the W.J.P makers' mark for William John Pellow.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
