Victorian Silver Mounted Meerschaum Pipe, 1890

Here we have a lovely Cased Victorian Meerschaum Pipe with a Sterling Silver Collar and an Amber Mouthpiece. The front of the pipe is expertly carved with a figure of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, holding her trademark laurel wreath. The Romans called her Victoria, which obviouly had a resonance for the British during Queen Victoria's reign. The hinged case is covered in thin brown leather and has a blue velvet lining.
The pipe was made in Birmingham by the firm J.G.S and dates to 1890. We haven't been able to find any details about J.G.S so they may well have been predominantly tobacco merchants rather than silversmiths. The carving on the bowl and the engraving on the collar are both skilfully done, so they were obviously very competent.
Condition is good, with the only issue being that the figure of Nike has lost one foot at some point in time. The meerschaum has developed a lovely golden patina through use. The case is slightly scuffed but the hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pipe is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long, 1.6cm / 0.63ins wide and 5.4cm / 2.1ins high. The pipe by itself weighs 20.0g / 0.71oz and cased up it weighs 41.9g / 1.48oz.
The hallmarks on the collar are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter q for 1890 and the J.G.S makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
