Victorian Silver Plate Bottle Holder, c.1880s/90s

This is a handsome late Victorian Silver Plate Bottle Holder. The holder is circular with a stepped base, a pierced scrollwork gallery around the body and a scalloped, beaded top rim. The handles have rolled middles and acanthus leaf ends. The holder will comfortably take a large champagne bottle and would look very elegant on any dining table or sideboard.
The bottle holder was made in Sheffield by John Round & Son and dates to around the 1880s/90s. John Round established his business in 1847 in a small workshop attached to his house in Sheffield. His son Edwin joined the business and they became John Round & Son. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and registered marks at the Sheffield, Chester and London assay offices. The Round family sold the business in 1874 but it continued to be known as John Round & Son Ltd until it was finally bought out by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in the 1930s.
Condition is good with just one small bruise low down on the galleried section, no significant plate loss apart from the inside base on which the bottle sits and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle holder is 15cm / 5.9ins from handle to handle, 14.5cm / 5.7ins in diameter across the base and stands 13.5cm / 5.3ins high. It weighs 489g / 17.25oz.
The underside of the base is stamped EPBM for silver plate, J R & S S for John Round & Son, Sheffield and has the four tridents trade mark that the firm used between 1886 and 1899.
