A very good quality Victorian walnut pedestal writing desk dating to circa 1880. The moulded rounded rectangular top inset with a black leatherette writing surface and with a lift up writing flap enclosed within the centre drawer. Each pedestal has a further four drawers with a Wellington type flap to the side although there is no key for the flap locks. All drawers are fitted their original brass handles and the central and right frieze drawer locks are stamped ‘SAMLHALL BIRMINGHAM’ and come with a working key. Each pedestal stands on a plinth base with concealed brown pottery castors. This desk has been polished to the reverse so can be used as a freestanding piece.

This is a lovely warm shade of walnut grain that has been finished with a traditional wax, it is in good solid condition. The rear of the drawer linings have expansion slots to allow for movement during the natural expansion & shrinkage of the linings - this a distinct sign of quality. There are marks/dents to the polish as expected for age and use, the right hand side is more marked and faded than the left. There is a slight drying line to the top back of the left pedestal. The leatherette is slightly marked and worn around the edges, the original gold tooling has worn away. We can quote for fitting a new leather in colour of choice - just let us know.
