Vintage Silver Roman Spoon, Sheffield 1979
This is a distinctive Vintage Sterling Silver Replica Roman Spoon in its original box. Roman spoons are the earliest silver spoons that we know of and the design is believed to be based on a mussel shell attached to a stick. This spoon is a faithful replica of a 2nd century original found near the city of Bath.
The spoon was made in Sheffield for Mallory & Son of Bath and dates to 1979. Established by E.P. Mallory in 1898, Mallory & Son are a renowned antique jewellery retailer in the ancient city of Bath. In the 1970s they commissioned a range of replica silver spoons based on Roman originals that had been found in and around Bath.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect. It seems likely that this has always been kept as a treasured souvenir rather than been put to use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 15.3cm / 6ins long and weighs in at a respectable 20.5g / 0.72oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the white rose assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter E for 1979 and the E P M in a shield sponsors' mark for E.P. Mallory & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
