Vintage Silver Cigarette Box, Mappin & Webb, 1962
Here we have a very stylish Vintage Sterling Silver Cigarette Box. The oblong box has engine turned decoration on the lid and plain sides. The interior is cedar wood land with an adjustable central divider. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette box was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1962. One of the best known names in English silverware was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with just one small ding in the top of the lid plus the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette box is 17.4cm / 6.8ins wide, 8.7cm / 3.4ins deep and stands 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 552g / 19.47oz but this does of course include the cedar wood interior.
The hallmarks, on the side of the box and the lid are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1962 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
