Vintage Silver Mounted Bottle Coaster, B'ham, 1987
This is a smart Vintage Sterling Silver Mounted Bottle Coaster from the 1980s. The coaster is circular with a turned wooden base which has a green baize covering on the bottom to avoid scratching. The silver gallery is solid with stepped decoration around the bottom and a rolled top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This is a smaller size bottle coaster, ideal for a standard red, white or rose bottle but not suitable for broader based bottles such as those for sparkling wine.
The bottle coaster was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Broadway & Co and dates to 1987. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coaster is 9.1cm / 3.6ins in diameter and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at 80.1g / 2.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the gallery, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1987 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the coaster.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
