Walnut and Yew Spindle 'Back Stool' Chair c. 1600

An absolutely beautiful and very early walnut chair with finely turned yew wood spindles, exposed tenons, chip carved U-gouge running cable decoration. Original timbers and pegs throughout other than the flanking (farthest back and furthest front) sections of the walnut seat board which have been replaced in oak a century or more ago.
The whole chair with absolutely superb natural and deep patination and rich warm and vibrant colour. The chair is still solid, sturdy and usable – remarkable for age.
Some old depletions from worm to the top rail, one stretcher and rear seat rail – all solid with no weakness and long since dead. The timber now hard as iron as with all walnut that is 400 years and more old.
Walnut and Yew trees are indigenous to the British Isles but are also indigenous to much of Europe and so attribution of place of origin is difficult. However the chip carving, arched frieze and very fine turning of the spindles are typical of English craftsmanship.
A really rare example, a completely charming and very original chair made by skilled and practiced hands in c. 1600
Dimensions are:
17.5 inches wide, 14 inches deep and 34 inches high.
Floor to seat is 19 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
