Waterbury Watch Co pocket watch with original box

An antique ‘The Trump’ Series I pocket watch by the Waterbury Watch Company, with original box.
Westbury Watch Company was set up in 1880 with a capital of $400,000. They went from strength to strength and invested half a million in a new factory which was designed by the same architect who carried out work for Waltham and Elgin.
For the first eight years, the company manufactured only long-winds, but these watches attracted the wrong kind of attention and were the subject of many jokes because they needed so much winding. From 1888, they concentrated more on short wind watches. They contained more parts then the long-winds, but still significantly less than most watches, and all of them were capable of excellent time keeping. All Waterbury short winds used the duplex escapement.
Like most watch companies, Waterbury also occasionally experimented with products unrelated to horology. The most noteworthy example is a 10,000-mile bicycle cyclometer released in 1890. Named "The Trump", it accompanied the "Series I" watch of the same name. When purchased to accompany the cyclometer, the watch came with a special stand to clamp it to a bicycle frame.
The fully signed movement in this particular watch is working nicely.
The watch itself measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The nickel case has the odd mark but overall is in good condition.
The watch glass is in good order.
The white enamel dial is signed with the Waterbury Watch Co name. There are several hairline cracks radiating from the centre. The hands are initially set by pushing the crown in and turning the hands clockwise.
The watch comes in its original cardboard box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
