A circa 1780-1800 West Country hoop back Windsor type chair, ash with elm seat, legs and spindles, the turned and ringed supports united an H stretcher A West Country Windsor armchair in with and impeccable original surface history. This variety of Windsor chair goes by many names which include, ‘hoop back’, ‘bow back’, ‘sack back’ or ‘elbow’ chair. Renowned for their durability and comfort, Windsor chairs have had a long history as a definitive category within the antiques collecting community in both the United Kingdom and North America. The variations within the design, manufacture and craftsmanship within the Windsor tradition have become synonymous with the study of regional antique furniture. Many of the design characteristics of this example firmly place it in a group of chairs associated with the ‘West Country’ with its typical steam bent u-shaped arm supports, the shape and design of its seat and leg turnings. But the overall state of preservation elevates this example far above what is typically seen on the market in terms of its age, condition and surface history.‍
