Whitehurst Derby Longcase Grandfather Clock Whiehurst Derby Longcase %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
It is a pleasure to offer this fine Mahogany long case clock by John Whitehurst of Derby dating from the second half of the 18th century which is in full working order.
John Whitehurst of Derby is a very famous and important maker of which much has been written.Apart from antique clock making he was a fine maker of scientific instruments and mathematician. His acquaintances at the time included Eramus Darwin,Benjamin Franklin,James Ferguson,Mathew Boulton.Josiah Wedgewood.James Watt,Joseph Wright and capability Brown amongst others.He.was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1779.It would be fair to say that he was one of the most eminent makers of his time Prospective buyers would be well advised to research the life and work of this great man.
The clock is a particularly nice nice example of his work and has many typical features such as the absence of subsidiary seconds and date dials..
The 12inch x 16 3/4 inch arched brass dial has an engraved silvered chapter ring and delicate spandrels. It is signed by the maker on a boss in the arch.Interestingly the engraver ran out of space and the "st" of Whitehurst has been squeezed in the little remaining space.
The 8 day duration weight driven movement strikes the hours on a bell and has been recently serviced together with the dial.It is in perfect working order..
The mahogany veneered case is a lovely colour and retains its original finish. The break arch hood has dental mouldings. The hood has brass Corinthian capped pillars..It is difficult tell how nice it is from the photographs and any potential buyers are encouraged to view the clock if at all possible.
It is an impressive clock being 7 ft 7 inches tall,a maximum of 22 1/2 inches wide and 11 1/4 inches deep.
The overall condition is excellent but with any item 250 years old there are the odd age related marks as can be expected but the clock is certainly in the condition that it is ready to go straight into any home.

If a lesser offer is accepted it will be considered a trade sale with the shipping being the responsibility of the buyer.
