William A.Hales b.1860 Oil Near Killarney

We are offering for sale this large oil painting on canvas by the artist William A. Hales, who has signed the painting W.A. Hales in the lower left hand corner. The frame bears a placque with the artist's name and the title of the painting 'Near Killarney'. This was presumably taken from the back of the canvas prior to relining.
The Lakes of Killarney are a scenic attraction in Ireland and consist of Lough Leane, Muckross Lake and Upper Lake. They are situated in a valley surrounded by high mountains, as shown in the painting.
William A. Hales is a bit of a mystery. According to the 1881 Census where he was listed as a painter, he was living in Normanton, Wakefield, Yorkshire with his wife Alice and it stated that he was born in Rothwell, a market town near Leeds in 1860. However he does not appear in any other Census up to and including 1911, so it is possible that he moved abroad, possibly to Ireland.
We have also checked our reference books and there is no mention of him, so he probably did not exhibit his work in any of the major galleries in mainland UK.
The painting is framed in an ornate, 3 1/2" swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 29 1/2" x 19 1/2" - 74.9cm x 49.5cm
Frame size 37" x 26 7/8" - 94cm x 68.25cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Very good condition. The canvas has been professionally relined at some stage. The frame is new.
