A Longcase Clock By William Barnard of Newark (Nottinghamshire). This example is Numbered No 679 and William seems to have numbered most of his antique clocks . Many examples of his clocks have been recorded and often his clocks have appeared in antique clock publication.

This is a single handed example with 30 hour movement is a very genuine longcase clock . The all oak case is very typical of his cases and his clocks seem not to change very much during his working life . All have H hinges to the long trunk doors and are are of a light golden oak colour .
Willam trained in Nottingham under another well known maker called Danial Tantum and after servicing his apprenticeship he moved to Newark his possible original home .
This is a slim clock with 10in silvered brass dial and stands very elegantly. Single handed clock were very popular in the 18th century particularly outside of London and telling the time within a minute is not difficult . Many have been converted later to two handed clock but this takes away the authenticity and makes them less desirable to antique collectors and also reduces their value .
