William Salter RBA, Bacchus and Ino, Dated 1856

This is a stunning Victorian oil painting on canvas in excellent order by William Salter RBA (1804-1875) depicting the infant Bacchus and Ino before a landscape. The frame bears an inscribed label verso dated 1856. The painting measures 52.5cm by 42cm excluding the frame.
William Salter RBA was primarily a historical and portrait painter, best known for his painting "The Waterloo Banquet" which is currently displayed at Apsley House. Salter studied under James Northcote circa 1822-7 and also spent some years in Italy teaching at the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts before returning to London in 1833. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1825-45 and at the British Institution, but mainly exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street, of which he was Vice President.
