William Widgery 1822-1892 Watercolour

We are absolutely delighted to offer for this watercolour by the well known listed artist WILLIAM WIDGERY, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. This is a typical Widgery watercolour, depicting a scene of a wooded area with a stream, which descends down a small waterfall, into a lower pool. There are silver birch trees on the left bank and hills in the background. There are a couple of cattle watering at the edge of the upper stream.
WILLIAM WIDGERY, 1822-1893, was the father of FREDERICK JOHN WIDGERY, 1861-1942 and JULIA C. WIDGERY, who flourished 1872-1879. He was an Exeter landscape and animal painter. He trained as a stone mason and was self-taught as an artist. He made a great deal of money by producing copies of Landseer's Monarch of the Glen and then took up art as a profession. He painted the scenery of Devon and Cornwall, (especially Dartmoor), and was of 'great local repute', although he only exhibited once in London, at Suffolk Street, in 1866. He also visited Italy and Switzerland. He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.
His auction results are listed on findartinfo.com (61 listings), artnet.com (89), artprice.com (222) and arcadja.com. His works are also listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market. The highest achieved price for a watercolour of William Widgery at auction, that we have been able to find is £1,900.
The painting has been mounted with washlines to complement and is framed in a 1" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
