Wine / Champagne Cooler or Bucket - 19 1/2"

A magnificent silver plated Electrotype champagne or wine cooler, ready for your Magnum or several bottles of your favourite fizz on ice. I have photographed a full sized Champagne bottle next to this monumental piece to show how large it is, towering 19 3/4" tall.
Electrotypes are exact copies of metal objects, electroplated. The process was invented by the firm Elkington & Co in the 1840s. Henry Cole, first director of the South Kensington Museum (today Victoria & Albert Museum) grasped the educational potential of this new technique, and agreed with Elkington to take moulds of historic objects in museums in England and around the world.
This piece dates to the mid-Victorian era, around 1850 featuring dancing maidens around the classical urn with musical instruments and face masks. Above this is a frieze of Grapes and Grape Vines.
It retains it's original metal removable liner with a few knocks around the rim from usage. Of course when not in entertaining mode, this is a work of art in it's own right and the most perfect and very grand vase for the most extravagant display.
English in origin and in superb condition, minor copper showing through in a few high points. 13" in diameter across the top x 19 1/2" tall. Impressive.
