Wooden Sculpture of a Saint Bernard Dog
An appealing Swiss folk art hand-carved wooden sculpture of a standing Saint Bernard rescue dog, dating 1930's-1940.
Excellently carved from a single block of traditional lime wood, this piece represents the famous Brienz regional carving tradition. It features the characteristic, textured faceted gouge marks used by these master Swiss workshops to expertly replicate the heavy, thick texture of the dog's coat—a style known globally in the antique trade as Black Forest woodcarving. A prominent, deeply incised collar groove is carved entirely around the neck for a separately turned miniature wooden brandy barrel.
The facial features are expressive, detailed with a hand-sculpted muzzle and hand-painted eyes showing a multi-tonal pupil and iris finish.
All the body remains entirely unvarnished and clean, displaying the clear, bare grain of the wood.
A highly collectable example of Alpine woodcarving sculpture, presenting in excellent original condition with a warm honey-brown patina and completely free from splits, chips, or restoration.
