Description

A magnificent large antique military chest dating from circa 1890. In black ebonised and painted finish it is emblazoned with “Good Save the Queen VR” to the front, “Officers Mess” to the side and the top with “Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders” along with their Latin moto “ne obliviscaris sans peur” (which translates to “do not forgot without fear”). The lid lifts on large hinges to reveal a brass name plate for Colin Campbell 1887, to the interior are some small drawers and some interesting carved apotropaic or “witches marks” of a hexafoil or daisy wheel. It is thought that apotropaic marks were believed to ward off evil spirits or the “evil eye” and where sometimes carved into doorways, wooden beams and furniture. Showing signs of wear and age and beautifully painted this interesting an attractive piece would make a unique coffee table or TV stand.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders is a light infantry company and was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1881 until amalgamation into the Royal Regiment of Scotland on 28 March 2006
