Original 19th century hand-coloured engraving. The original was an illustration for "Pelleas and Melisandre" a symbollist play first performed in 1893, which was also later adapted as an opera by Debussy. Mary Stokes was a major artist of the of pre-raphaelite movement . Published in Vienna, inscribed "Mary Stokes Pinx" and by the publisher.
