Description

Description: The unknown painter, a follower of Carlo Maratta, illustrates the biblical episode (Genesis, 39.2) in which Joseph, having become a trusted servant of the Pharaoh's official, refuses the attentions of his wife by fleeing.

The cloak, in the woman's hands, will constitute tangible proof of the false accusations made against Joseph, decreeing his sentence to prison.
The most widespread color in the painting is the very dark brown, almost black of the background. From this color, the portrait of the girl emerges in brightness, enhanced even more by the light dress and the color of the flesh.
There is a strong contrast in brightness between the figure of the girl and the dark background.
The light comes from the left and directly illuminates the face of the girl, and that of the young Joseph.
Furthermore, dark and deep shadows are created to the right of the figure.
In fact, the shadow covers part of the body of the young man while the neck is almost dark, except on the profile of the throat.
In the painting we can see a particular language, the result of the calibrated fusion of baroque dynamisms and classical harmonies in vogue in the Marche in the 17th century.
