Description

Here we have a beautiful Vintage Sterling Silver Locket from the 1970s. The locket is oval shaped with a plain back and the front engraved with a butterfly resting on a flower on a textured background. When opened, the locket has frames on both sides with a visible picture size of 3.5cm x 2.7cm.

The locket was made in Birmingham by jewellers and silversmiths Joseph Smith & Sons and dates to 1973. Founded by Joseph Smith in 1905 with premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter, the firm became Joseph Smith & Sons either just before or just after the Second World War. They made jewellery for many retailers but their own mark is most commonly seen on bracelets and lockets. The company remained in business up until the late 1990s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The locket snaps shut securely and the hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The locket is of a good size measuring 5cm by 3.2cm and weighing in at 13.4g.

Of necessity, the hallmarks on the back of the locket are small but can be clearly read with a magnifier. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Y for 1973 and the J S in a shield makers' mark for Joseph Smith & Sons.
