Description

This is a George V Silver Jubilee Crown coin. The coin was struck in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee, 25 years, of King George V's accession to the throne in 1910. The coin has a design of St George and the Dragon on the reverse which has given it the nickname of the Rocking Horse Crown. The obverse has the head of King George V whilst the edge has ANNO REGNI XXV for 25 year reign around one side and the traditional DECUS ET TUTAMEN for an ornament and a safeguard around the other side.

As was the practice in the 1930s, the coin was struck in 500 grade silver, which had replaced the Sterling 925 grade in 1920.

The Crown is 3.81cm / 1.5ins in diameter and weighs 28.35g / 1oz.

The Crown coin with a value of five shillings dated back to the reign of Edward VI and was one of a number of European fine silver coins of similar size and weight, such as the Spanish Piece of Eight, that were interchangeable as international currency. By the latter part of the 19th century the Crown had fallen out of regular use and in the 20th century it was primarily struck as a commemorative coin for special occasions.
