Description

This is a stylish Art Deco Silver Plate Three Piece Tea Set. The set consists of a teapot, a cream jug and a sugar bowl. All three pieces stand on low circular bases and have panelled bodies. Each piece has the initials A H elegantly engraved on the side.

The tea set was made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths and electroplaters Mappin & Webb and dates to around the 1920s/30s. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is very good, with no dents and no significant plate loss except on the inside of the teapot where many years of stirring the tea has rubbed away some of the plate. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teapot is 23.5cm / 9.25ins from spout to handle, 14cm / 5.5ins across the body and stands 15cm / 5.9ins high. The cream jug is 11cm / 4.3ins from lip to handle, 7.7cm / 3ins across the body and 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. The sugar bowl is 14.2cm / 5.6ins from handle to handle, 9.5cm / 3.7ins across the body and 7cm / 2.7ins high. All together the set weighs in at 828g / 29.2oz.

Each piece is stamped on the underside MAPPIN & WEBB LTD and HARD SOLDERED.
