Early 20th C. Silver Plate Meat Skewer, c.1900-30

Description
This is a good quality Early 20th Century Silver Plate Meat Skewer. This is a long skewer for a large joint of meat and has the lozenge shaped cross section typical of 19th and early 20th century skewers. The initials M.H are neatly engraved at the top of the handle. The skewer was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to between around 1900 and 1930. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good with only a slight upturn to the tip, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The meat skewer is 30.3cm / 11.9ins long and weighs 80.0g / 2.8oz.
The underside of the handle is stamped MP over A for high quality silver plate and WH & S for William Hutton & Sons.
