Description

This is a smart Early 20th Century Silver Plate Pepper Shaker in classic style. The shaker is bulbous with a wavy edge top rim and stands on four spreading feet. The caster top is a square dome with a turned finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pepper shaker was made for Selfridge & Co of London and dates to between around 1910 and 1930, although the design is registered to the late 1890s. Selfridge & Co was founded in 1908 by Harry Gordon Selfridge with the famous Oxford Street store having its official opening on 15th March 1909. Up until the 1930s they sold a range of silver plate tableware which was made for them and branded with the Selfridge & Co name.

Condition is fair, with a few little dings around the lower part of the body and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The caster top fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 7.7cm / 3ins high and is 3cm / 1.2ins across at the widest point. It weighs 26.0g / 0.92oz.

The underside of the base is stamped SELFRIDGE & CO, LONDON and has the registered design number 297349, which dates the original design to 1897.
