This is a good quality George IV Sterling Silver Cream Ladle in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The ladle has two sets of initials, M M and W P, elegantly engraved in slightly different styles at the top of the stem. This suggests that this ladle passed through at least two generations, probably of the same family.

The cream ladle was made in Exeter by William Welch (II) and dates to 1822. The older William Welch was active in Plymouth Dock between 1758 and 1800. He specialised in flatware but did make some items of tableware. William Welch II, also a specialist spoon and flatware maker, was active in Exeter between 1801 and the late 1820s and was probably the son of William Welch I.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ladle is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and 3.9cm / 1.5ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 18.8g / 0.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the Exeter date letter f for 1822, the George III duty mark (Exeter didn't introduce the George IV mark until 1824) and the W W makers' mark for William Welch (II).
