Description

This is a stylish, heavyweight Art Deco Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker is of tapered cylindrical form with a line decorated base and a band of line decoration on the upper part of the body. The pull off shaker top is pierced in a star pattern.

The pepper shaker was made in Sheffield by Viner's and dates to 1937, the height of the Art Deco era. Viner's was founded around 1900 by Adolphe Viener, who later Anglicized his family surname to Viner. Starting out as electroplaters, the firm moved into silverware and later pewter in the 1920s. They remained extremely successful up until the 1970s but later had difficulties and ceased trading in the 1980s. The Viner's brand name is now owned by Oneida.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 7.2cm / 2.8ins high and is 4cm / 1.6ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at a very respectable 59.1g / 2.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the upper band of line decoration, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter u for 1937 and the E V makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.
