Description

This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver 3 Piece Condiment Set. The set consists of an open salt with blue glass liner, a pepper shaker and a hinged lid mustard pot with blue glass liner. Each piece has panelled sides.

The set was made in Birmingham for Selfridge & Co and dates to 1930. Selfridge & Co was founded in 1908 by Harry Gordon Selfridge with the famous Oxford Street store having its official opening on 15th March 1909. Up until the 1930s they sold a range of Sterling Silver and silver plate tableware which was made for them and branded with the Selfridge & Co name.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the glass liners and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. There is a little give in the hinge on the mustard pot. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter and 3cm / 1.2ins high. The pepper shaker is 2.8cm / 1.1ins in diameter and 7.1cm / 2.8ins high. The mustard pot is 5.8cm / 2.3ins from rim to lid, 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter and 5cm / 1.9ins high. Without the glass liners the set weighs in at a respectable 57.4g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 105.6g / 3.7oz.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1930 and the S & Co Ld sponsors' mark for Selfridge & Co Ltd. They also have the retail stamp of SELFRIDGE & CO LTD, LONDON.
