Description

This is an unusual Edwardian Sterling Silver Two Part Belt Buckle. Each panel is oblong with a scalloped rim and a shell motif at the bottom. The panels are decorated with two different Ancient Greek warriors facing each other, one with a dragon crested helmet and one with a classic horsehair crested helmet. These may represent Achilles and Hector, the great rivals from the Trojan War.

The belt buckle was made in Birmingham by Levi & Salaman and dates to 1902. Founded by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman in 1870, Levi & Salaman quickly established a reputation for high quality silverware and remained in business for fifty years until they were merged into Barker Brothers in 1921, with the brand name continuing on through the twenties.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

When joined, the buckle is 7.2cm / 2.8ins wide and 4.6cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 32.8g / 1.15oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, at the top of the left panel, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman. There is a partial set at the top of the right panel.
