Description

Here we have a fun late Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Grinder in the shape of a milk churn. The sides are decorated to look like barrel staves and bands. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pepper grinder was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Hukin & Heath and dates to 1894. The mechanism is by Peugeot Freres of France. Founded in Birmingham by Jonathan Hukin and John Heath in 1855, Hukin & Heath is best known for its collaboration with Dr Christopher Dresser and their exhibitions of his groundbreaking designs for them at their London showroom. Hugely successful, the firm remained in business producing a broad range of consistently top quality silverware up until 1953.

Condition is very good, with just a slight flattening of the bottom rim at one point plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. The grinder is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper mill is 6.2cm / 2.4ins high and 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at 101.2g / 3.5oz.

The hallmarks, around the bottom of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1894 and the JTH over JHM makers' mark for John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton of Hukin & Heath.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pepper grinder.
