Description

This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Letter Opener. The opener has a flat oar shaped blade which is set into a cylindrical handle with spiralling ribbed decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The letter opener was made in Birmingham and dates to 1892. Unfortunately the design means that the makers' mark is hidden where the blade joins the handle so we are unable to say who made it.

Condition is good with just a small dent towards the bottom of the handle plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The letter opener is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and weighs in at 8.0g / 0.28oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The visible hallmarks on the blade are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter s for 1892, with the makers' mark hidden as stated above. In addition the handle has the lion passant stamp for Sterling Silver.
