Description

This is an attractive Pair of George III Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs have bright cut engraved decoration down the outside of each arm and an acorn design on the back of each bowl. The initial U is elegantly engraved in the cartouche.

The sugar tongs were made in London by Peter & Ann Bateman and date to 1793. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her sons Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 230 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tongs are 14cm / 5.5ins long and weigh in at a respectable 27.8g / 0.98oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter s for 1793, the George III duty mark and the P B over A B makers' mark for Peter & Ann Bateman.
