Description

This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Bookmark with a Green Agate handle. The bookmark is shaped as a trowel with a plain blade, split to fit on the page, and an engraved shaft holding the handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The bookmark was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1906. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bookmark is 9.2cm / 3.6ins long and 1.4cm /0.55ins across the blade. It weighs 5.8g / 0.2oz.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the blade, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
