Rare, Unique 8" Scottish Longcase Clock. C. 1725

Description
Extremely RARE and almost definitely unique early 18th century Scottish longcase clock of very small proportions with 8" dial. This wonderful small clock is one of the earliest Scottish longcase clocks to have surfaced in many years. Made around 1720 - 1730 by JAMES HOLMS of KILMACOLM.The case is predominately made of red walnut with flat top hood with fretted decoration to the front and sides. The base of the case has been re-newed in the late 18th to early 19th century and is of stained pine, the original base probably rotted away.
The 8 day movement is obviously completely hand made and because it is so early and provincial shows a number of unusual manufacturing techniques. The brass dial is nicely engraved. It comes with its original pendulum and original lead weights. One point worth mentioning is the weight wheels are the original wooden ones.
The movement has been completely overhauled and cleaned and is in full working order.
Not a lot is known about James Holms apart from he was charged along with a number of others in the parish of poaching in 1716 and that he died in 1739.
SIZE Only 70" high overall. 14 1/2" wide. The dial is 8".
