Description

William Bunnett, London, 1763
Silver pair cases, 50.5 mm
Verge, calendar

A nice mid 18th century verge with original champleve calendar dial, in silver pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced 'lace edged' balance cock and pierced plate, four square pillars and silver regulator disk. Signed “William Bunnett. London” and numbered (6377). In good condition, though with a little wear and scratches to the pillar tops. The movement and calendar are both working.

The 'lace' decoration is typical of London watches made within about five years either side of 1760. The shell motive on the neck of the balance cock table is more unusual.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with calendar aperture, in very good condition. Signed “Bunnett, LONDON”. Nice original 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands, though the minute hand has lost the tip.

INNER CASE : Silver hallmarks for London, 1763, maker's mark SP (rubbed). In quite good condition, though the pendant has been reattached and the base reinforced. The middle sleeve of the hinge is absent, though the hinge still holds the movement firmly. The crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case. No marks. The hinge and catch are fine (button worn) and the case closes correctly. There are a couple of old repairs, one to the bezel and the other on the inside of the back, near the neck, and the rim of the bezel is a little worn. Probably not the original outer, but of the right period and a reasonable fit (slightly big).

William Bunnett is listed in London in 1763.
