Description

Stunning 19th.c. bronze sculpture of Hermes. Also known as Mercury, the messenger of the gods, guide of the dead and protector of merchants, shepherds, gamblers, liars, and thieves. Set on a marble base and depicted floating on a column of air coming from the mouth of Zephyr, whilst holding the caduceus or kerykeion, a Greek herald’s staff taking the form of a scepter entwined by two serpents in the form of a double helix and surmounted by wings. Hermes wears his usual petasus (round hat) and features wings to both hat and feet. Good overall condition, the scepter has been re attached and the base of the column bears a slight crack to one side.
